The contemporary art exhibition The Cloisonné: Echoes of the Silk Road officially opened at the M P Birla Millennium Gallery in West Kensington, London. With a distinctive curatorial approach, the exhibition places traditional Chinese cloisonné craftsmanship in a global spotlight, drawing widespread attention.
1. Zixiang A: A Practitioner Bridging Tradition and the Contemporary
Zixiang A, the artist of this exhibition, is a talented Bai ethnic artist from China and the cultural ambassador of her hometown, Fengyu in Dali, Yunnan Province. She studied under renowned Chinese Masters of Arts and Crafts Peng Wang and Tiehui Huo, and works across jewellery, cloisonné, sculpture, and oil painting.
Rather than merely working within tradition, she blends it with contemporary contexts to explore new modes of expression. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture—especially the ancient art of cloisonné—her practice reimagines tradition in a modern context.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese culture, she blends classical elements with contemporary design. Her work reflects a deep understanding of ritual aesthetics and directional symbolism, while boldly experimenting with modern artistic forms. Not only does her practice demonstrate superb craftsmanship, it also conveys a thoughtful engagement with cultural inheritance and innovation.
2. Li Xue Xun Feng: Morse Code Meets Ritual Aesthetics
Li Xue Xun Feng stands out as a centrepiece of the exhibition, reflecting Zixiang A’s deep understanding of traditional craftsmanship and her innovative artistic language. Rooted in cloisonné, the piece subtly incorporates Morse code—creating a poetic dialogue between ancient ritual and contemporary symbol.
The work takes inspiration from the ancient jade cong, its square structure symbolising the cosmology of the four directions. A bi disc crowns the top to honour heaven, while the base references a yellow cong for earth. Each side bears ritual jade motifs—qinggui (east), chizhang (south), baihu (west), and xuanhuang (north)—mapping a cosmological space.
Decorative motifs include the Wenchang Pagoda, Wenchang Brush, green ruyi scepter, and zun-dou wine vessels—blending civil ideals with ritual aesthetics. The vessel is adorned primarily with the “Steady Steps to Success” cloud pattern. Its vertical structure reflects the classical spatial logic of “ritual below, literature above”—a core principle in traditional Chinese ritual theory.
A striking feature lies in the base, composed of gold brick-like forms—a subtle homage to Morse code. Unlike the rest of the vessel, this section is entirely crafted in metal. The bricks are arranged in four rows to form a Morse code sequence that spells out the initials L, X, X, F—the English transliteration of the work’s title. Long bricks denote dashes, short ones dots.
This subtle intervention not only encodes the work’s name through visual language, but also bridges traditional ritual order with contemporary systems of symbolic expression. Rather than disrupting cloisonné’s traditional aesthetic, this intervention adds mystery and contemporary flair—revitalising the craft and offering fresh expressive potential.
3. Echoes of the Silk Road: Tracing a History of Cultural Convergence
The exhibition’s theme, Echoes of the Silk Road, reflects the profound and enduring cultural significance of this ancient route. For centuries, the Silk Road served as a vital artery of cultural exchange between East and West. Cloisonné was introduced to China from Europe and the Arab world via this route, and after more than six centuries of refinement, it flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This rich historical context provides fertile cultural ground for the exhibition.

4. A Cultural Bridge: Resonance Between Chinese and British Art Communities
At the opening ceremony, Minister Counsellor Liyan Li from the Chinese Embassy in the UK attended the event and delivered a speech. Guests from both the Chinese and British art communities were also present. In his remarks, Mr Li underscored the significance of cultural and artistic exchange in fostering mutual understanding between nations. As a cherished symbol of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, cloisonné serves as a meaningful bridge across cultures. He expressed his hope that the exhibition would deepen dialogue and collaboration between China and the UK in the realm of arts and culture.
During the exhibition, Zixiang A led guided tours and demonstrated the cloisonné-making process.
