An enigmatic and ever-evolving presence whose sound stretches beyond sonic borders, there’s not many artists who musically morph as sprawlingly as Moonchild Sanelly. The South African polymath’s newly released third album, Full Moon, is a triumph of unique and resilient creativity, with the many-sided vocal prowess and piercing songwriting of Sanelly shining from beneath diverse and often daring production choices.

Continuing to break convention—as she has done throughout her decorated career—and reach new creative heights, the idiosyncratic and charismatic Sanelly has flexed her innovation across this excellent new LP. Wonderland were keen to find out more, and so asked the artist to exclusively take us through the album, in our latest track-by-track.

Listen to the album…

Read Moonchild Sanelly’s thoughts…

“Scrambled Eggs”

“Scrambled Eggs” is about how I love to flex, because I’m known to be humble and not say much! I’m also not a chains and diamonds spender. For me, the moment I realised I had made it, was when I first ate avocado and scrambled eggs. I now know it’s something I’ll be able to eat for the rest of my life. So it’s a humble brag!

“Big Booty”

That’s a love letter to my ass because it’s big, it’s been with me through thick and thin, and it’s helped me shake the world!!!

“In My Kitchen”

I’m not great in the kitchen, but one thing I can cook is a p*nis, that’s what I do in my kitchen… The boys can’t deny…

“To Kill a Single Girl (Tequila)”

I’m generally quite an honest person and when drinking tequila I would have unnecessary thoughts around my truth and I had to apologise, because it eliminates the truth, so I had to choose my struggle. I ultimately decided to keep the truth and drop the tequila. I stand on what I say.

“Do My Dance”

Like I said, I don’t need no head in my house, I just need one in between my legs and between my thighs! I mean, my group of girls are all very independent… If we break it, we pay for it, so no heads needed… Service providers only!

“Falling”

“Falling” is a mirror conversation with myself, knowing that my family are watching me after running away from home and never giving them the satisfaction of failing. This is something that has now become the motivation for me to win, because I am never drowning.

“Gwara Gwara”

This track is a pussy dangler, it’s basically a guide on how to get what you want without giving anything up.

“Boom”

The track sums up the idea that you can have better sex with broke boys than you can have with the rich ones. I’m not bashing anyone, I’m just highlighting the facts we all know!

“Sweet & Savage”

“Sweet & Savage” is literally a record about my bisexuality, it’s my anthem for the queer community!

“I Love People”

“I Love People” is the first song I ever wrote and it’s based on how I lost my virginity at 17 and it finally made sense years later.

“Mntanami”

“Mntanami” is an apology letter from my father to myself, as well as a letter from my childrens father to them. Fathers take accountability and don’t emotionally manipulate… Fathers seek therapy in order for them to use their words… Fathers who don’t know what their upbringing was and who thought they were doing enough but really they were doing nothing at all…

It’s for fathers who know how to use their words and articulate themselves.

“I Was the Biggest Curse”

This song sums up the relationship I had with my first boyfriend. The first time I ran away from home I just saw him crumble and when I started to reflect, I realised people that lose themselves in me… It doesn’t matter what level I’ve been on during my life, from nothing to where I am today, there’s a certain power that can be disguised as a curse. People literally lose themselves around me. I initially thought this was a curse, but now I know that it’s a power. I have made a lot of sacrifices in order to chase my dreams. I learned a lot of things during that relationship. Once I left all I had was 500 South African Rand, a sewing machine and a suitcase… I chased my dreams and never looked back.
